What Can Be Done?

Captioning: converting spoken words into visual form and displaying them so they can be seen/read.

In group settings (large meetings, movie theaters, sports arenas, ferries…), use captioning to convert sounds into text and display them. Provide an option for hearing-aid compatible assistive listening systems. Make the availability of this easy for people to find and use.

In individual settings (hospitals, doctors’ offices, pharmacies, business offices…), use effective communication strategies and appropriate technologies

When advertised, captions attract a sizable group who previously didn’t understand what was said. This is good for business and it satisfies requirements under the Washington State Law Against Discrimination (WLAD) as well as The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
